Valeric acid is an extract from the dried roots and rhizomes of the plant Valerian, a member of the family Valerianaceae. It is a sesquiterpenoid derivative. It exhibits antidepressant, sedative, analgesic, anticonvulsant, antibacterial, antiviral, and antitumor effects, and can be used to treat insomnia, epilepsy, lower blood pressure, and fight cancer.
